Rev. Canon Tutu van Furth, Desmond Tutu’s Lesbian Daughter, Calls for Equality
After almost 400 religious figures backed a global ban on conversion therapy and an end to laws criminalizing homosexuality, Rev. Canon Tutu van Furth calls for equality. “Religious leaders and religious structures all over the world have not yet arrived at the recognition that we are all fully human.” Tutu married Marceline van Furth in 2015. This marriage forced her to give up her license to officiate as a priest in South Africa. Despite this, Tutu van Furth says reconciling her faith and sexuality was never an issue for her.
Lesbian Couple Settles Lawsuit Against Retirement Community
Mary Walsh and Bev Nance, a married lesbian couple, settled a lawsuit against Friendship Village, a St. Louis retirement community, that did not allow them to live there. The community’s policy defined marriage as being between a man and a woman, and you can guess why they were refused entry. The legal director for the ACLU that helped handle the case did not disclose theorems of the settlement. The lawsuit was dismissed by a federal judge last year, ruling that the Fair Housing Act does not protect on the basis of sexual orientation. But, the 8th U.S. Court of Appeals remanded the case earlier this year. Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, sexual orientation was protected.

Sarah Slaton dropped a music video for her new song, “Get Up.” The video features her bandmate and partner, Sarah Joelle, getting her out of the house. “I wrote this song to help release the self-doubt I found myself struggling with this past year. I also wanted remind myself and others to find that inner voice that pushes you to get back up when the world can feel like it’s falling apart.” Slaton said about the song. We now have a trailer for France’s official Oscar submission for Best International Film, Two of Us. The film tells the story of two retired women, Nina and Madeleine, who have been in love for decades. While most people think they are just neighbors, we know better. The pair enjoy their life together until an unforeseen event turns their relationship upside down. This causes Madeleine’s daughter to slowly find out the truth about their relationship. Fun fact! The film was inspired by a story the director heard from a friend about two women in their 70s who kept the doors to their apartments open to one another. The Two of Us will be available on video on demand in the US on February 5th.
