“The L Word: Gen Q” is Filming! Did the Announcement Include a Hint for Tina and Bette’s Reunion?

This just in: The L Word: Generation Q season 3 filming has officially begun! Gen Q was renewed for season 3 earlier this year, and now production is underway. But what can we expect? Call me crazy, but there may have been a hint in the announcement!

“Besties, we’re rolling!!! #TheLWord Season 3 is OFFICIALLY IN PRODUCTION!!!” The L Word’s official twitter account posted.

We know season 3 of the (original and best) L Word aired back in 2004, so we’re wondering if leaving the “:Gen Q” out of the announcement was a sign for us sleuths.

Because guess what? In season 3 of the original L Word, Bette and Tina are back together after a 6-month time lapse since the end of season 2. And Lez be honest: the build-up to Bette and Tina getting back together is climaxing in Gen Q.

In the final episode of Gen Q season 2, Bette’s love interest, Pippa, admits she fears being used by Bette, who she’s convinced isn’t over Tina. It’s fair to say we know she’s right. Bette attempts to reassure Pippa, but is she reassuring herself?

Shane’s not convinced that Bette’s over Tina, either. She implies that Bette’s being a hypocrite for pushing her to chase love when Bette’s not doing the same. Shane asks what Bette would do if Tina showed up at her doorstep, to which Bette won’t give a straight answer. Shane urges Bette that now is the time to act.

Then there was that interruption, when Bette and Tina were alone at the party. Bette asks Tina why she asked if Bette’s still in love with her and Carrie interrupts right when Bette might have admitted that she wants to try again with Tina.

Poor Carrie! I really wish she wasn’t a caricature of Bette’s opposite; it feels like a dig at old-school butches. She’s portrayed as boring and unworthy of Tina’s affections, unlike the exciting, beautiful, and historically quite toxic, Bette.

If Bette and Tina get back together, Bette better not play the “always just out of reach” part again. Tina deserves better. Bette always acted like she knew she was out of Tina’s league.

Of course, a very large, nostalgic part of my heart wants Tina and Bette back together. But do I think they have ever had a healthy relationship? No. Then again, what makes good TV?

We know, we know, missing the “:Gen Q” in a tweet probably doesn’t hint at anything, but the build-up to Bette and Tina rekindling their romance is real. We’re thirsty, and the Showtime website isn’t giving away much:

“A bold new series for a bold new generation. The groundbreaking drama series, THE L WORD®  returns with THE L WORD®: GENERATION Q, starring Jennifer Beals, Kate Moennig and Leisha Hailey alongside a new group of tightknit friends experiencing life, love, setbacks and success in LA.”

The L Word: Gen Q will be back on Showtime by the end of the year. The wait is real!
